2017 coaching staff
Coach Stretch has been the Head Swimming and Diving Coach since 2010. A Bay Area native, Coach Stretch graduated from Acalanes High School. While at Acalanes she received the Most Valuable Athlete award her Senior year having competed in Cross Country, Soccer, Swimming and Water polo. A distance swimmer and backstroker, she competed at the North Coast Section swim meets throughout high school. She continued her water polo career in college at Chico State, competing or for the club team and receiving the Chico State Most Valuable Award and the making the CWPA All-Conference Team.
Coach Stretch received her BA in Physical Education from Chico State and an MA in Kinesiology from San Francisco State. She has coached competitive swimming since 1997 with recreational swim programs in the East Bay. Prior to Laney, she coached at Acalanes High School and led the Dons to top five DFAL team finishes and top ten NCS finishes. Coaching seven individual All-Americans, five All-American relays, and a 2007 NCS record breaker. In addition she assisted the varsity girls’ water polo team toward their NCS Championship bids from 2002-2004.
During her tenure here as the head coach, Laney has placed 2nd at the Bay Valley Swim Conference in 2011 and 2015 seasons. She has also led individual swimmers to success including event champions, top eight finalists and top three relay teams.
Coach Stretch believes in creating an all-inclusive environment that prepares the student athlete for success in the pool, classroom and beyond. “We want our student athletes to be successful and our program is meant to help our athletes reach their full potential in all aspects of life."
Beth Flynn comes from upstate New York where she attended Syracuse University. She came to the Laney Aquatics community in 2010 when she joined the Laney Water Polo team. After competing for Laney in water polo and swimming for two seasons, she joined the staff as an assistant coach in the Fall of 2013.
She has been the Head Water Polo Coach since Fall 2014, and has been co-coach of the Swimming and Diving Team during the 2015 and 2017 season. During the 2015 season, she was awarded Bay Valley Coach of the year along with Coach Stretch. She is currently an active member of the USMS program
Rick Becker, MS, ATC, CSCS, CES
Rick Becker is a NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer. Rick began his athletic training education at Diablo Valley College in 2004 before transferring to Cal State Fullerton where he graduated magna cum laude receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training. As a Bay Area native, Rick returned to Northern California in 2014 to begin his Junior College career at DVC before joining Laney College in fall 2017.
As a graduate student at California University, Rick earned a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science focusing his efforts on rehabilitative sciences and corrective exercise. Rick has a strong focus on manual therapy and a philosophy in treating the whole body, rather than simply addressing the pathology, in the preventative effort to reduce the occurrence of overuse injury related to sport.
Rick’s vision as an athletic trainer is to blend his education and training with clinical expertise, knowledge of current research, and patient expectations to create a pathway providing the best possible health care for the Laney College student-athlete population.
